Voices: Jimmie Åkesson, leader of the Swedish right-wing nationalist party Sverigedemokraterna, talks about his view on immigration, mixed with the voice of the political theorist Hannah Arendt.

Translation of the cut from the interview ”Zu Person” with Hannah Arendt:

”The decisive day was when we heard about Auschwitz – in 1943. At first we didn’t believe it. My husband and I said that the Nazis were capable of anything. We didn’t believe it because militarily it was unnecessary. My husband was a military historian, he knows about these things. He said, don’t be gullible, don’t believe all you here. But six months later we did believe it. We had the proof. That was the real shock. Before that, we said, well, one has enemies. That is natural. Why shouldn’t people have enemies? But this was different. It was as if an abyss had opened. We had the idea that amends could be made for everything else. Amends can be made for almost anything at some point in politics. But not for this.”
